Writer's pictureStraight from the Heart

The last breath

Dr. Poppy Hazarika

There I stood, watching you die Those bloodshot eyes, lost and blank Those weak hands and the wasted body And as I carry you in the wheelchair To the doors of the unknown Asking of your daughter, for one last time To adjust the strands of your hair And breathing the last breath Your last breath There I stood, watching you die Helpless, numb and still as a stone Yet awed by death, death that is imminent watching your life fade away to darkness Like the hourglass sands hitting the bottom Counting each breath, as the last breath Your last breath

And here I stand today Flipping through the images Pushing them to some corner of my heart Those wires, tubes, the emptiness of the room That half opened window and the unmade bed Those white sheets wrapped around your body

Holding the last breath

Your last breath
